Professor of Business and Sociology at New York University/Stern School of Business to guide executive MBA and executive education programs at the Berlin School of Creative Leadership.

Founding Berlin School Dean Professor Pierre Casse will continue to teach and inspire

Berlin, October 15, 2008 – Doug Guthrie, Professor of Management at New York University's Stern School of Business and Professor of Sociology in NYU's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Faculty Director, Custom and Non-Degree Executive Programs at NYU/Stern, will join the Berlin School of Creative Leadership as its new Academic Director in November.  Through his roles at both schools, he plans to leverage the strengths of both institutions to push forward the agendas of executive education in the areas of leadership and creativity.  Professor Guthrie’s areas of expertise are in leadership, management, corporate governance, and economic reform in China.

Guthrie succeeds Berlin School founding Dean, Professor Pierre Casse.  Casse will serve as Dean Emeritus, continuing to teach in the Berlin School Executive MBA in Creative Leadership Program and at the School of Management and Innovation at Steinbeis University Berlin.

In addition to his duties at NYU, Professor Guthrie has also taught at Harvard Business School, INSEAD and the Graduate Schools of Business at Stanford University, Columbia University and Emory University.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley and has been with NYU/Stern since 2004.

“We are thrilled to have Doug’s expertise to build on the foundation of Pierre Casse and his team", said Michael Conrad, President of the Berlin School.  "Doug will continue to innovate the Berlin School's unique approach -- turning great creatives into great creative leaders.”

“We also look forward to becoming a global leader for custom executive education programs for the creative communication industries,” added Conrad.  “Doug has played a leadership role in some of NYU/Stern’s most interesting and innovative Executive Education offerings, like the new TRIUM program, which has very quickly become a top Executive MBA program.  We have similar ambitions for the Berlin School.“

“Over the coming years I eagerly anticipate working with some of the best academic minds, creative industry gurus and the most talented creative executives in the world around important creative leadership issues,” said Guthrie recently after wrapping up a recent teaching session in Berlin.  “We will provide creative executives around the world the latest research, knowledge, expertise and training needed to lead."

Guthrie will also serve as a Professor at the School of Management and Innovation (SMI) at Steinbeis University Berlin.  The Berlin School is partnered with SMI to offer its part-time global Executive MBA in Creative Leadership Program for executives in the creative industries of advertising, marketing, media, journalism, entertainment and design.

Carsten Rasner, Director of SMI is also excited about Guthrie’s move to the Berlin School.  “Doug strengthens the SMI academic team by providing top business leadership insights, and a deep knowledge of Asian economies and culture.  He brings a global perspective and a strong pedigree in the social sciences and humanities from The University of California, Berkeley and The University of Chicago.  We all very much look forward to working with him.”

“We would like to deeply thank Pierre Casse for his years of dedication to helping establish the Berlin School and set our high academic standards,” said Conrad on the transition from Casse to Guthrie.  “We are sad to see Pierre relinquish his position as Dean with us, but we’re delighted he will continue to teach and advise us on academic affairs.  We’re equally thrilled that Pierre’s Associate Dean, Eoin Banahan, will remain engaged at the Berlin School as an instructor and key academic advisor. Eoin’s dedication to our Executive MBA participants is a big part of why the Berlin School has made such a positive name for itself around the world.”

“I wish Doug success in building onto a great and unique executive MBA program,” said founding Dean Pierre Casse. “At the Berlin School Doug will find a challenging academic environment full of talented creative executives and many top professors.  I wish him the best of luck and look forward to working with him in the future.”

Professor Guthrie will formally begin his role as Academic Director on November 9th, when the next class of Berlin School Executive MBA in Creative Leadership Program participants begin their course of studies.  Guthrie’s core academic team will include Professor David Slocum, Special Advisor to the Academic Director, Eoin Banahan, Executive MBA Leadership Coach and organizational researcher Abby Larson, who is currently working on her doctorate on leadership.

Guthrie’s recent work on leadership, management, corporate governance, and economic reform in Chine includes books such as Dragon in a Three-Piece Suit: The Emergence of Capitalism in China (Princeton University Press); Politics and Partnerships: The Transformation of the Nonprofit Sector in the Era of the Declining Welfare State (University of Chicago Press, forthcoming); and China’s Radical Transformation: Economic Reform, Global Integration, and Political Change in the World’s Largest Nation (Polity, forthcoming).
