'Non Ducor, Duco - I am not led, I lead'
20-Nov-2010What happens when a city outlaws all forms of outdoor advertising? In the case of Sao Paolo, the advertising went inside, and the urban street artists took control outside. In this fascinating Masters Thesis, Eduardo "Duda" Hernandez showcases two related cases that transformed Brazil's largest city: the banning of outdoor advertising in 2007 followed by a generation of graffiti artists giving the city a distinct visual culture in the years that have followed.
Duda is a veteran Creative Director in Brazil's advertising industry, having worked at McCann, Taterka and other leading agencies. He is currently a professor at ESPM (Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing) in Sao Paolo.
Aside from getting to know the city's artists, gallery owners, critics, politicians and others involved in this story for his research, Duda conducted a "visual safari", documenting the breadth of the city's amazing works with more than 3.000 photos. The result is a stunning visual journey and a look at how political leadership made room for artistic leadership to take flight.
Duda's thesis won the Michael Conrad Thesis Award for the best Master's Thesis during the Berlin School's November 2010 graduation ceremony.
